At the core of Andrea Mulcahy’s work is an exploration of the energies inextricably tied to the land, the environment, and her daily interactions. Born and raised in Kansas City, she pursued her artistic interests at the University of Kansas. On a mission to discover a medium that suited her expressions, she focused her studies on Textile Design. After receiving her degree, the realm of weaving still did not resonate as her chosen medium. She experimented with wood and clay, and even dabbling in a more traditional medium, painting. It was not until she relocated to Ajo, Arizona that she found her way to working with metal.
She set up her own studio with only a few tools, gradually upgrading and expanding her shop as her passion grew. Steel provided an immediate connection between her thoughts and experiences with the severity of this new desert region. After four years, she relocated once again, this time to Texas. In this new environment, she was compelled to explore dimensionality. From three-dimensional sculptures to wall reliefs, she took a reductionist approach to line and form as she investigated depictions of the female body through steel.
Determined to have a distinctive aesthetic to her work, she originally finished every sculpture with an antique silver powdercoating. She desired the impact of her work to be more than a recognizability of color but one of form. Now based in Kennebunk, Maine, Mulcahy has undertaken the next significant evolution of her work. She began studying concepts of energetic healing and began seeing the vibrational and energetic movements everywhere she looked. Color and form were reconceived through this new lens. Engaging bent metals and colors within her sculptures, she was able to freeze a moment in time, capturing a particular energetic state. A simultaneous flow and tension emanate from her bent steel, allowing her viewers to connect, relate, and reflect on the unique essence of the energies that surround us.
Mulcahy’s work has gained esteem throughout the country and abroad with solo and group exhibitions nationwide with organizations such as Casco Bay Artisans Gallery in Portland, ME; SOFA New York; Craighead-Green Gallery in Dallas, TX; and Gallery Materia in Scottsdale, AZ; among others. She has participated in Residency programs and both international and national juried exhibitions, such as the Arizona Biennial with the Tucson Museum of Art.
